Monochrome photo of Richie McCaffery grinning quietly (no teeth)Richie McCaffery was born in Newcastle in 1986 and now lives in Northumberland. He recently completed doctoral research into Scottish poetry of the second world war as a Carnegie scholar at the University of Glasgow.

Recipient of both an Arts Trust of Scotland Edwin Morgan Travel Bursary and a Hawthornden fellowship, Richie has also been a writer-in-residence for the Cromarty Arts Trust and at Hugh MacDiarmid’s cottage, ‘Brownsbank’ in Biggar. He has been twice shortlisted for the Scottish Book’s Trust ‘New Writer’s Award’ and the Eric Gregory Award in 2012 and 2013.

He started to write poetry more seriously while an undergraduate at Stirling University and was encouraged there by Emeritus Professor Roderick Watson.

His poems have since appeared in a number of magazines such as The Rialto, The Dark Horse, The Manchester Review and Smiths Knoll.

Some have also been selected for anthologies such as Lung Jazz: Young British Poets for Oxfam, Best Scottish Poems 2012 and Salt's Best British Poetry 2012.

His first full-length collection was Cairn (2014) from Nine Arches Press.
